The book, although softbound, is rugged enough to withstand being carried everywhere in my backpack for over 6 months, to be read at leisure on the train or in waiting rooms. As an amateur photographer with a limited budget interested in restoring and preserving precious family photos I couldn't justify the purchase of the $600+ Photoshop package. Ctein often gives several methods of approaching restoration. It was Ctein who introduced me to the benefits of using software with full 16-bit vs.
This book covers all of the bases for restoring faded, scratched, moldy, dirty and torn photos, negatives and slides. I can't recommend this work strongly enough. Here I discovered Picture Window Pro which, at $89.95 is much more affordable than Adobe's flagship, Photoshop. From the basics of scanning(getting the photo or negative into your computer) to all of the tools of restoration you will probably find an answer here.
8-bit image editing. Buy it. Although much of the book uses Photoshop tools and plugins he also introduces less expensive yet capable software such as Picture Window Pro. I tried Photoshop Elements which was OK at the beginning but I soon ran into its limitations.
Along the way, I learned how to improve photos I have taken more recently that I did not realize could be improved. With the help of this book I was able to recover photos that I thought were hopeless. No other author that I have found comes close to Ctein's encyclopedic memory and ability to explain the theory behind the processes. When I started scanning 3,000 or so color slides that I had taken over the last 55 years, I discovered that some had deteriorated drastically and dramatically. These were of great value to me, so I set out to buy every book I could find on photo restoration.
I was able to restore an 1899 photo which had faded almost to nothing and display all of the details. No doubt there are considerably more benefits to this purchase The value of the purchase price was obtained in a few days.
Value for money. This book has assisted me greatly, the workflows in the book allow you to easily repair a large array of problem images, it's fantastic. There is much a photo restorer can learn from this book, this book delves into the more advanced features of photoshop to assist even a seasoned photoshopper to learn a few extra tricks.
A high quality book that is priced very reasonably. Well organized and illustrated throughout. This is a very informative book. Shows you how to digitally repair damaged photographs in Photoshop, and in other (affordable) image editors.
